My Instagram post from five days ago stated that the year 2024 (or more accurately the Year of the Wood Dragon) corresponds to hexagram 43. Some describe it as a prediction or prophecy. That’s not entirely accurate, so I thought I’d clarify.
It is not so much a prediction as it is an application of the I Ching theory.
You start at the four corners of the universe and anchor the mandala around the earth, hexagram 64 of the I Ching, that is, from the vantage point of the earth.
These will be the equinoxes and solstices; sunrise, noon, sunset, and midnight; and the guardians of the four directions of the earth. These four corners correspond to the doubling of four of the eight hexagrams:
- Hexagram 29: water on water,
- Hexagram 30 is about getting angry,
- Hexagram fifty-six and ten, thunder beats thunder,
- Hexagram 58, lake on lake.
So, in theory, you take these four hexagrams out of the cycle because you need to “draw” these four points and anchor the mandala (i.e. the I Ching cycle) so that it is centered on the earth.
Then connect the remaining 60 hexagrams with the 60 years in the lunisolar calendar. This is the 60-year lunar (or heavenly stems and earthly branches) calendar since the Zhou Dynasty:
Here is an illustration of the 60-year calendar cycle drawn in a circle or mandala form:
Oh, like designing a mandala, you start with four doors, four directions, four corners, so that’s exactly what we’re doing here.
You superimpose the remaining 64 hexagrams of King Wen’s hit you received (skipping hexagrams 29, 30, 51, and 58, our anchors point to the four gates) over the calendar period, and this is what you get:
Once we do this, we will see that each year of the Wood Dragon, once every sixty years, corresponds to a return to the main force of the forty-three hexagrams. The year 2024, or more accurately, February 10, 2024 to January 28, 2025, is one of the years of the Wood Dragon.
For example, according to this theory, the year 2023 (the year of the Wood Rabbit) has the power of Hexagram 42, showing that there will be new developments and major innovations or progress related to wind and thunder in this year.
Hexagram 41 governs the year 2022. This is a painful year. The old things entering this year will rot in that year. According to the guidance of the Oracle, greater flexibility is needed to successfully navigate the hexagram 41.
Interestingly, the Golden Rat in 2020 corresponds to Hexagram 39, when global movements will come to a standstill and extenuating circumstances will block the natural path. (Rat people often bring illness and disease, so That is Also very interesting. )
Here’s a quick review of the equinoxes and solstices:
Northern Hemisphere | Solstice and Equinox | astronomical events | Yin-Yang Balance |
summer solstice | The solstice represents the time when the tilt of the Earth’s axis has the greatest impact on sunlight distribution | The North Pole is tilted at its greatest angle toward the sun | a longer day
(In the leading) |
winter solstice | The North Pole is at its greatest angle away from the sun | longer nights
(yin dominant) |
|
spring equinox | The vernal equinox represents the tilt of the Earth’s axis not closer to or away from the sun, resulting in equal lengths of day and night | The Earth is positioned so that neither pole is tilted toward the Sun, but the Earth is starting to tilt toward the Sun | balance of day and night
(balance of yin and yang) |
autumnal equinox | The Earth is positioned so that neither pole tilts toward the Sun, but the Earth begins to tilt away from the Sun |
So in my opinion, sharing the 43 hexagrams corresponding to 2024 is not divination.
If I personally use the casting method for I Ching readings with the purpose of revealing what will happen in 2024 through such a reading, that is divination.
That’s not what I did in that article.
Instead, what I did was find the year of the wood dragon on that long-established reference chart and share it with the public, Hey, according to this correspondence table which I did not make up at all, 2024 is under the jurisdiction of hexagram 43.
I mean, it’s the extent of predicting weather through meteorology. I mean, according to the established system of studying global processes and phenomena, the Year of the Wood Dragon brings with it the Yin Qi of the forty-three hexagrams. But what you think of “weather” forecasting, if you will, is up to you. Just because it’s raining doesn’t mean you’re going to get wet.
Suppose I performed a divination, and the divination result obtained through ritualized spell casting was Gua Five (no – I just made up this number at will). The meaning of divination is: According to my prayer, this year’s collective movement is around the five hexagrams.
Alas, I don’t know if what I said makes sense.
Okay, then what. Saying that the Year of the Wood Dragon corresponds to Hexagram 43 is the same as saying that 2024 corresponds to Key 8: Strength (or Justice, depending on the tarot deck you are using), because 2 + 0 + 2 + 4 = 8 .
Is this a prediction for 2024? Will it be of strength or of justice? I don’t know, maybe, I guess. But I wouldn’t call it divination.
Alternative version of the Four Trigrams and Gua Qi Theory + Different Correspondence Systems
As with Western occultism, there are often different and conflicting systems of correspondence, and the question does arise of which one you use. I don’t think there is any perfect answer to this inquiry.
If you look up the correspondence between the hexagrams of the I Ching and the sixty-year Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches (it integrates the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches because it is a fixed system under a cycle), in Chinese, a popular correspondence system that appears is as shown above The four anchor hexagrams representing the four stars or the four fixed qi are: the second hexagram, the thirty hexagram, the fifty-first hexagram, and the fifty hexagram.
The image archive above does not repeat the entire table but shows the relevant differences. You’ll see that the skipping occurs in years 1 and 2, with Hexagram 2 being skipped because it is one of the four fixed points. The twenty-nine year coincides with the thirty-one hexagram.
At least as far as 2024 is concerned, the resulting hexagram in either corresponding system is still hexagram 43, and the two systems are consistent until the cycle returns to the year of the Wooden Ox (2046), and then we can argue again which hexagram rules the year 2046. ;-D
Here is another version, drawn as four anchor points based on the four direction points of the Innate Bagua:
With the same concept, insert the received hexagram order into the order of the lunisolar calendar, skipping hexagrams 1 (heaven in the sky), 2 (earth in the earth), 29 (water in water) and 30 (fire over fire).
