The past year has been a difficult one. I’m still coming down from it. There are a few situations that appear to be nearing completion. Even so, residue remains. Sometimes I want to crawl into a little ball and get away from the world. That’s how it works sometimes.
One thing I’ve learned is that no matter what, it’s better to be present. Checking out may seem like an option, but it rarely works long-term. Eventually, whatever you’re trying to run away from will come back and chase you until you give it the attention it needs.
Tarot cards have always been my go-to tool when life throws me a million monkey wrenches (my least favorite tool is those wrenches). It allows me to see what might be ahead and acts as a light to see what’s going on inside.
I felt guilty for neglecting my needs until my body caught my attention. This is an old pattern I’m trying to break. For years I have used body, mind, spirit communication to help me change this tendency. I’m not the creator of this layout and don’t know who to take credit for. But I do know it’s the perfect way to check in and show up.
I cover this spread in my book, The Cards You’re Received – What to Do When Life Gets Real: A Tarot Guidebecause I find it useful for reflection when you’re facing something difficult: loss, grief, illness, etc.
A lot of these themes arrived on my doorstep last year, and when I wanted to go out with a pitcher of wine and check it out, tarot cards brought me back to the present. This is a spread I use time and time again.
Here’s how to do it:
Shuffle. When ready, lay the deck face down and cut it into three piles. Then, reassemble the deck any way you like. You can choose three cards from the top of the deck, or you can fan the cards and draw three visually. These locations are just body, mind and spirit.
These cards can show you areas where you are doing well or where you need more support. This is a recent reading I did for myself.
Body: Knight of Wands Reversed – Too much movement, not enough correct physical movement. this is true. I was slacking on my exercise routine. It’s time to get back in the saddle!
mind: Eight of Swords – This card can mean self-imprisonment, but it can also mean powerlessness. I feel very anxious about a situation. It keeps me up at night. In fact, I have a hard time focusing on different things. However, the Eight of Swords reminded me that I wasn’t actually in trouble. Once I stopped struggling, there was a way out. The other side of this card is isolation. I prefer to “suffer in silence”, which probably doesn’t help.
Spirit: Four of Pentacles – I’m rock solid in this department. I’ve been doing grounding and shielding work so this makes sense.
This reading helped me see that my body and mind needed attention. While I would like to believe that I am good at self-care, these cards point to a different truth.
I invite you to check out this unfold anytime you want to know your truth, especially when life is unpredictable and difficult. You can learn about it and many other useful tarot card layouts The Cards You’re Received – What to Do When Life Gets Real: A Tarot Guide.
Stay present, my friends.
