In over 15 years of spiritual interpretation, I have had to deal with some very difficult questions from clients who have suffered profound loss or trauma.
However, one of the most heartbreaking things is understanding the death of a baby, child or young person, sometimes after a brutal and very unpredictable death.
Grieving the death of a young person can trigger some of the deepest and most challenging emotions. While dealing with such a loss is never easy with grieving parents and relatives, the spirit has been a consistent guide through the years.
While I have survived the loss of someone so young in my own life, I am no stranger to this. I have supported many families in this area over the years, both professionally and personally.
The first time I realized how fragile life is was when I was 12 years old. I’m looking forward to the summer vacation at school. One of my classmates who lives down the street and her family have relatives visiting for the summer. The two visiting cousins are about the same age as us, so I have a great group of girl playmates this season!
And the visiting cousin’s younger brother, who is only six years old. He is a cute kid with blond hair, bright blue eyes, and a face full of playful freckles. In those carefree days, he followed his two sisters, my girlfriend, and me wherever we went. I didn’t mind having him around and even encouraged others to let him play hide and seek and many other childhood games with us.
This body is not me; I am not limited by this body. I am a life without boundaries. I was never born and I never died~ line by line
Sadly, summer passed quickly and soon the tourists went home and my friends and I went back to school. But about two weeks into the new school year, she came up to me before class looking distraught.
“Something happened to my little cousin,” she said. “he died.”
Apparently, he was playing in an old abandoned building nearby when he somehow fell 30 feet and suffered a fractured skull.
I have nothing to say. The 12-year-old me had no idea how to react. All I could think was that it was impossible. What a happy, energetic boy he is? I just spent the entire summer with this boy and can’t comprehend that he is gone!
The question is, why did the soul of my young friend choose to leave life so early? After all, he was only six years old?
Over the years, the Holy Spirit has continually shown me that our souls take on physical form to experience earthly existence. This allows our soul to understand what it needs to evolve to more important and enlightened planes of existence and higher consciousness. However, in some cases, a soul may only embark on a brief earthly journey for a variety of reasons:
soul lessons
The experiences of physical life, including its many challenges and difficulties, are a series of lessons for the individual soul and those around them. Our souls choose certain life challenges before incarnation in order to learn certain lessons or achieve certain spiritual goals. Suffering is predetermined by the soul itself and is necessary for its evolution and fulfillment of its mission on earth.
Therefore, the challenges, pain, and difficulties we encounter in life are not just random or punitive, but have a deeper purpose for the growth and development of our souls. The untimely death of a child is sometimes a lesson for the soul or a catalyst for growth and spiritual development that the soul chooses to use as part of its soul’s journey.

Transition Soul Project
Some souls come to the material world for a brief stay. These “transitioning souls” come to gather information, teach or heal others, fulfill certain soul contracts, bring people together, or complete some part of their spiritual growth journey. Their brief lives often have a profound impact on those around them, teaching them about love, resilience, and the interconnectedness of life and death.
Therefore, as part of the soul’s plan, the soul may choose to leave early to further its own growth or to complete specific spiritual lessons for itself or others. Once they complete their soul purpose or mission on earth, they return to the spiritual realm. Therefore, from a soul’s perspective, their mission was accomplished as planned when they transformed, even though in our human understanding the young lives were tragically cut short.
For example, I was relieved to learn that my childhood friend’s death was not in vain. Over time, it led to new regulations and stricter safety measures in public places to prevent similar accidents from happening. Therefore, his family knows that his death served humanity in at least one way. He made the ultimate sacrifice, but his soul was richly rewarded on its evolutionary journey.
karma release
Our souls also experience the results of past life actions. This relates to the concepts of karma and reincarnation, where the soul evolves over different lifetimes, and early death is sometimes part of the journey of spiritual growth.
For example, leaving early may be related to resolving or balancing certain karmic debts. The soul leaves when it has achieved what it set out to do, or when continuing does not serve its highest good or others involved. This departure may also mean a karmic adjustment to the soul group or community to which the soul is associated.
However, death is never due to “bad” karma or “paying the price for wrongdoing.” I am often asked if anyone has died due to karmic debt, and my honest professional opinion is absolutely not! Karma is about the soul learning, growing and evolving. No more, no less. Leaving early is because that soul has completed its mission on Earth or wants to achieve spiritual ascension earlier, and for no other reason. In short, it’s about progress, not punishment.
Only when we truly know and understand that our time on earth is limited—and that we have no way of knowing when our time will end—will we begin to live each day to the fullest as if it is the only day we have. We have one~ Elisabeth Kübler-Ross
divine intervention
The early departure of a soul from this earthly realm is sometimes an act of divine intervention or heavenly intercession to spare the child from unnecessary pain or extreme hardship that may occur as they continue their life’s journey in the future.
The imminent danger or doom from which they are protected is often due to a serious breakdown or major breach of a soul agreement they have made with another person, or a reality of disastrous free will choices and co-creation by a family member or relative, their neighborhood or community. Even an entire society or country. The life experience that the soul originally agreed upon is significantly altered or derailed by the poor choices and actions of others around them, which not only destroys their soul plan for this life, but also causes them to be harmed physically, mentally, or spiritually. They are then called back to the spiritual realm for their highest good.
abandoned mission
Sometimes abandoning one’s life mission is the soul’s own free choice, deciding to be in tune with Spirit and Divinity, and doing so for reasons that those who remain in this life cannot possibly understand. While a soul may choose certain courses or experiences prior to incarnation, the exercise of free will in life may result in deviations from these plans. Sometimes leaving early is the soul’s free will choice to deviate from the originally intended path.
If you have experienced or are currently experiencing the untimely death of a young loved one, I pray that these messages bring you some kind of comfort or at least help.
It is also important to acknowledge that the above views are all very personal and can vary widely even within the same religious or spiritual tradition. Many people find comfort in their faith’s teachings about life after death and the purpose of life, including the lives of children who die young. Others may not subscribe to any spiritual reasoning, focusing instead on the medical, social, or environmental factors involved. Conversations on this topic should always be sensitive and respectful of different beliefs and experiences.
