This past weekend my daughter and I attended an event with psychic John Edward. If you’ve never had a chance to see him work, go. He is the real deal. This was my second time meeting him, but my daughter’s first. Needless to say, her chin was in her lap for the entire two hours. She loves it.
Sometimes people were allowed to ask questions about his work. A young woman took the microphone and started talking about “her gift.” That gift is… psychic abilities. John turned this into a teachable moment by saying that intuition is not a gift for a special few, but something that everyone has.
While I don’t remember what he said verbatim, I remember feeling relieved. Over the years, people have commented on my “gift.” I’ve never been comfortable with that.
I’ve also encountered many people who come into my office for a tarot reading eager to show off their “gifts.” It usually goes like this: Suddenly, they “see” a spirit in the room and wonder if I saw it too. I always say, “No…you must have brought it in,” and keep reading. I never accept this nonsense.
I never considered my ability to be a gift. Rather, they are skills that I have developed over time. Like John, I believe everyone has intuition. Ask anyone if they’ve ever had a bad feeling about something, and even the most die-hard nonbeliever will have a story to tell. Animals also have powerful instincts that help them survive. Just like our four-legged friends, our sixth sense is a survival mechanism.
In fact, the most psychic people I have ever met were not tarot readers, astrologers, or any professional readers. Often, these people have to go through difficult situations. When you are forced to do this, you have no choice but to develop your intuition.
My mother was short, 4 feet 11 inches tall, and suffered from severe epilepsy. She suffered severe seizures that sometimes kept her out of school for weeks at a time. Her parents were poor farmers and there were too many people to feed, which meant good nutrition was impossible. Because of this, she suffered from diseases of poverty such as rickets. Alcoholism and abuse were also part of her childhood. At the age of thirteen, her studies ended. At that time, many farmers’ children left school early because they had to go to work.
In this dire climate, her intuition blossomed. My mother was not book smart and never balanced her checkbook, but she was the most intuitive person I know. She sees the dead, is able to detect people’s motives, and often has premonitions that turn out to be true. In our family, there was nothing special about her abilities. No ego, no talking about “gifts”, no showing off. That’s it.
My parents never made a fuss about my interest in tarot and astrology. They ignored it, which meant I could study without interruption. That’s one of the reasons I’ve been able to develop my skills. I had time and no one objected or treated me like I was some “gifted” psychic genius. I studied for ten years before I finally turned pro. By that time, I had accomplished a lot.
Over the years I have observed many people rushing to become professional psychics, tarot readers, astrologers, etc. Some of these people mean well, while others view the job as “easy money” (which is not the case). Many people believe that they have “talent”. None of them took the time to fully develop their skills. Needless to say, most of them are no longer doing this job. Unfortunately, some readers cause real damage on their way out, meaning other readers have to clean up their mess. I’ve been on cleaning crews more times than I can count.
This is a long-winded way of saying that intuition is a muscle, not a gift of the privileged few. There’s nothing special about it…or you. Some people are talented, but that’s because they did the grunt work for a long time before turning pro. Like any muscle, your gut needs to be exercised or it will become flabby. In order to develop your abilities, you must commit to a lifetime of study and hard work, just like bodybuilders do before they start taking on competitions.
Arnold Schwarzenegger couldn’t be who he is without training. He worked for a long time before getting oiled up and wearing those little shorts on the main stage. Bragging rights only come after the hard part.
“The better you do it, the less you’re going to go around showing off that you’re a muscleman. You know, you’re wearing a regular shirt – you’re not always trying to show off what you’ve got. You’d better say less. ~ Ah Schwarzenegger
