I’ve always loved thought-provoking stories. One of my favorite songs when I was seven years old. Its profound wisdom has stayed with me throughout my life. Here’s the thing:
In a dilapidated cabin in the woods, there lived an old lady of about 85 years old. Due to her advanced age, daily life was difficult, but this lively woman knew she had to continue to survive.
One day, while she was out gathering wood for a fire, she was approached by a mysterious wizard.
“Good morning,” the wizard said. “I have good news for you. Today is your lucky day! He then explained that he was the forest wizard and he would grant her any wish.
The old lady paused to consider this generous offer. But before she could make up her mind, the wizard interrupted her thoughts. “I could turn all your wood into pure gold. Just imagine how rich you would be!” he suggested.
“Oh, what good would that do?” replied the old woman. “I could hardly carry it back to my cabin because the gold was so much heavier than the wood!
“Okay, then maybe I can turn all the water in your house into wine,” the wizard said enthusiastically.
Happiness is not a matter of intensity, but of balance, order, rhythm, and harmony~ Thomas Merton
“Well, what good does that do a woman of my age?” replied the old woman. “I had a hard time staying sane, so drinking a lot certainly didn’t help.”
“How about making an entire beautiful outfit out of the finest and most expensive fabrics in the world?”
“My God, what good will that do a lonely old man like me?” replied the old woman. “I have no place to wear such fancy clothes, so it’s a waste on me.”
At this time, the wizard became a little impatient and said, “Dear, there must be something you want, right?”
The old woman thought for a while and said, “If you can, can you make me young again? I don’t want gold, wine, glory, wealth, I just want my youth. I want health, strength and vitality, that’s all.”
Satisfied that he had finally found what he was looking for, the wizard smiled and said, “Of course! Everything is possible for me. So get ready to be young again when I turn back time.”
Happily, the wizard granted the old lady’s wish, and in a puff of smoke, she transformed into a strong, light, and healthy young woman. Her hair is no longer gray and thin, but long and luscious. Her body is healthy and toned, and her face is bright and rosy.
After witnessing her incredible transformation, the young woman thanked the wizard for everything he had given her, picked up the wood, put it over her shoulders, and ran back to her cabin in the woods, laughing and dancing!
Therefore, many people exchange health for wealth, and then have to exchange wealth for health~ Ajay Matt
A wishful fairy tale? Sure, but it stuck in a young girl’s mind and taught her the wisdom of putting her health and happiness first from a young age. It taught her that health is wealth.
Another ancient and thought-provoking parable that I encountered recently is that of the Mexican Fisherman and the Merchant Banker.
An investment banker decided to take a break in a small coastal village, where he met a local fisherman who had caught several large fresh fish that day.
The impressed banker asked the fisherman how long it took him to catch all those fish, and the fisherman replied, “Not a long time.” So why don’t you stay out a little longer and catch more fish? asked the banker.
The fisherman replied that he had caught enough fish that day to feed his family. Instead of greedily catching more fish that would just go to waste because his family couldn’t possibly eat them all, stop when he’s caught enough fish so he has time to get back Home playing with the kids and taking a nap with the wife.
“I prefer a full and happy life. I don’t want to fish all day unless it is absolutely necessary to feed my family,” the fisherman added.
Ironically, the merchant banker told the fisherman that he should take some advice from an Ivy League graduate with an MBA. This can help him become very successful and wealthy.
Most of us spend too much time on the urgent stuff and not enough time on the important stuff~ Stephen Covey
“If you spend more time fishing, you can buy a bigger boat and eventually form a fleet. Because all the excess fish you catch can be sold for a profit. Or better yet, maybe a few years Later you can open your own fish canning factory and distribute your catch to consumers around the world!
Think of how rich you will become! In fact, if you announced an IPO and sold all shares of the fishing company to the public, you could make millions of dollars,” the banker continued.
“Then what?” asked the fisherman. To this, the commercial banker’s answer is:
“Okay, then you can sleep in, catch some fish, play with the kids, take a nap with your wife, hang out in the village every night, drink some wine and play cards with your friends.”
The moral of the story is, who would you like to be in life? A wealthy merchant banker or a happy and contented fisherman? This is a work-life balance issue that only you can decide.
