From the outside, I appear to be a level-headed, carefree person. You would never guess that I was walking around with a quiet panic because there was so much energy in my step. Yes, there is a lot of anxiety lurking beneath the surface. It doesn’t interfere with my life. It’s just now.
That day, I was thinking about why this was happening. Is it because I’m a Gemini and have six Mercury ruling planets in my chart (Gemini rules the nervous system)? Or something else?
After much reflection (and reasons), I found the root cause: childhood. Yes, that’s where it comes from, like most people’s fears and phobias.
Part of this internal boiling was due to the dysfunctional family I grew up in. There was a lot of talk about “money matters,” which led me to save any change I could find just in case we ended up homeless, which was something I worried about from time to time (my parents always made me think This might happen, even if it doesn’t).
In school, fire drills and warning videos about bus accidents made me nervous. I would get scared every time I stepped on the bus, so I would sit in the front because I didn’t want to be like those unfortunate kids in those movies. Those in the back always seem to get hurt the most. They were also the biggest assholes, so I learned not to be an asshole on the bus. (Psst… I also keep a bag of clothes next to my bed and have an escape plan in case of a fire.)
To put an end to this panic-inducing nonsense, my parents watched movies like Hero in embarrassment and The Exorcist When we are safely in bed. The problem was I heard screaming coming from the room. The fear of a murderer breaking into the house or being possessed by a demon does not create optimal conditions for sleep.
A few years later, none of the things I worried about had happened.
I am financially secure.
I’ve never been in a bus accident.
I wasn’t murdered (duh).
I have never been possessed by a demon.
But now, I’ve found new reasons to be anxious: an old cat, post-apocalyptic movies (Sorry, Walton Goggins, I love you, but I can’t fall out), and the state of the world. sigh. This worrying habit is hard to break.
Children who grow up with anxiety tend to harbor that anxiety for the rest of their lives. When we put them in adult situations, drone on and on about the state of the world, and expose them to scary content, are we really surprised when they get stressed out and act out? I thought about how kids today also have to deal with social media and active shooter drills and wondered what impact that would have? When you live with constant bad news and the fear of being harmed at school, what is your long-term outlook?
I don’t have any answer for this. What I do know is that my own experiences growing up with anxiety allowed my panic to simmer slowly in the background. It’s hard to turn it off. Perhaps the best thing we can do as adults is let our kids be kids. This doesn’t mean hiding all the ills in the world, but there may be a more thoughtful approach.
But what if you’re an adult and this belief has become ingrained?
Here’s my best advice:
:: receive help. A good therapist can provide you with counseling and help you address your fears.
::Turn off the TV and use social media less.
:: Rest more.
:: Spend time with inspiring people. Set boundaries with anyone who makes you anxious. Sorrow loves company. I keep a polite distance from life’s troubles.
:: Finally, add more fun to your life. Do the things you loved doing as a child. For me, that’s reading. Put a book in my hand and I’m fine.
Life is too short (even though the thought makes me anxious) for existential dread. As I move toward senior citizenship (just a few years later), it’s time to focus on what went right, rather than what went wrong.
I’m still here, still breathing. No demon in sight. call.
