What does spiritual maturity mean to you? Every time I ask people this question, I get a variety of different answers.
I asked one baby boomer and he said this meant going to church, donating to charity, studying the Bible and obeying the Ten Commandments.
When I asked a Gen Z client, she said it meant minding your own business and not caring what other people think of you, because what they think is none of your business. She also said she was Wiccan and didn’t believe in wishing negative energy on others because she knew if she did it would just come back to her.
I recently asked four people at a social gathering and they had different opinions on this question. They were aged in their 30s and 40s and were accompanied by a teenage boy. Interestingly, one thing they all agreed on was that it is spiritually mature to establish healthy boundaries with family and friends for the sake of your own mental and spiritual health. For example, one woman said that if she didn’t stop hanging out with a friend, she would hit rock bottom.
“I just couldn’t stand the way she treated me. I used to spend a lot of time stressing about the things she would say and do. I would always overthink every toxic interaction with her and our so-called friendship was not good for my mental state,” she explained. “So, for me, spiritual maturity is walking away from people who bring you down.”
Yesterday I was smart, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am smarter, so I am changing myself~ Rumi
I couldn’t agree more. In my opinion, if someone continues to insult you, betray your trust, or hurt your feelings in any way, it is a clear sign that they are mentally ill. immature. Spiritual maturity means not only wishing well for others and not wanting to see their downfall, but it also means working to support and uplift everyone around us. For me personally, spiritual maturity also means evolving, keeping what works for you and discarding what doesn’t.
Most importantly, spiritual maturity for me means recognizing that I am a soul, a spiritual being having earthly experiences in a physical body, and that comes with certain karmic responsibilities and obligations to myself, others, and us Sacred responsibility of this planet. Live in.
I also loved how my guide made me realize that the animal kingdom and nature has a lot to teach us about true spiritual maturity. We can learn a lot about spiritual maturity just by spending time with our pets. Our adorable furry companions are smarter and more spiritually aware than many people realize.
I think the most important thing to understand is that spiritual maturity is a journey, not a destination. It is a process of continually deepening our spiritual awareness, wisdom and understanding. It’s not just about accumulating occult knowledge or following some esoteric practice.
Just as some older people behave immaturely, or some teenagers are wise beyond their years, spiritual maturity is not determined by age, knowledge, education or even life experience. Over the years I have met people who have spent decades studying spirituality, trying various religions, or dabbling in a long list of esoteric and mystical practices, and yet they remain profoundly unwise and immature spiritually. Spiritual maturity is not about how much you know or what you believe, but about who you are and what you do.
Spiritual life does not keep us away from the world, but brings us deeper into the world~ Thomas Merton
Spiritual maturity refers to profound inner transformation and growth in one’s relationship with God, self, others, and the world. This process mainly involves the following aspects:
Self-awareness and self-control: Recognize our own flaws, emotions, and behaviors and work to manage them constructively. We must cultivate spiritual virtues and personal values such as patience, humility, compassion, and temperance.
Faith and Conviction: A mature spiritual life is characterized by a deep, unwavering belief or belief in one’s personal beliefs that guides your thoughts and actions even in the face of difficult challenges and doubts.
Release and separation: This does not mean isolation or apathy, but rather the ability to remain internally free from attachment to material possessions, results, or even self. It’s about letting go of things that don’t serve you and not clinging to thoughts and things that are causing harm to yourself or others.
Growth and Learning: Spiritually mature people understand that spiritual development is an ongoing journey. They embrace opportunities to learn, grow, and transform throughout their lives.
Inner Peace: Spiritual maturity is also the ability to maintain peace and inner peace in all situations, rooted in a deep connection with the divine or a higher power.
Community & Relationships: Spiritually mature people strive to develop and maintain healthy, supportive relationships and contribute to the community in ways that reflect their spiritual values.
Compassion and Service: A spiritually mature person understands, empathizes with, and serves others selflessly, recognizing the interconnectedness of everyone and everything.
Spiritual Practice: Regular practices such as prayer and meditation can cultivate a sense of connection with God, enhance mindfulness, and promote spiritual reflection.
Self-love and self-care: Developing yourself is an often overlooked aspect of spiritual maturity. Taking care of your own physical, emotional and spiritual health is not only vital to your personal health, it is also a prerequisite to being able to effectively help and serve others.
Spiritual maturity is highly individual and varies by faith, spiritual path, and personal life experiences. It is the result of a life of conscious, ongoing effort to grow spiritually and in alignment with one’s deepest values and beliefs.
