Roots of Vedic Astrology
While many people use the term “astrology” as a blanket term, it is actually a practice and field made up of many different systems, with Western astrology being the most common form in English-speaking countries. Another system less used in Western countries is Vedic astrology, although it is equally prominent and influential. Both forms have their own insights and advantages, and both can be quite accurate. In fact, they can actually be used together to gather more useful information about your life than you can use them individually.
“Veda” means divine knowledge or insight. It has its origins in the four Sanskrit religious texts written in ancient India called the Vedas. Covering topics such as yoga, meditation, philosophy, healing and astrology, the Vedas are designed to support believers in finding happiness, peace and contentment in life. The earliest writing is thought to be from over 5,000 years ago. Bhrigu, considered the father of Vedic astrology, is believed to have written most of the scriptures.
Difference Between Western Astrology and Vedic Astrology
There are several key differences between Western astrology and Vedic astrology. For example, Western astrology is a tropical system, which means it focuses on the sun and the seasons. However, Vedic astrology is sidereal science, so it focuses on the moon and stars – including fixed stars and constellations.
Likewise, Western astrology focuses on psychological understanding, including the self, in which the sun, moon, and rising signs are the major players. In contrast, Vedic astrology focuses on your spiritual journey, which includes karma, dharma, and your life path. It is also very helpful for timing events in your life.
Both Western astrology and Vedic astrology contain 12 zodiac signs and use a 12-house system, but the positions of the planets are measured differently. They remain fixed in Western astrology but are constantly changing in the Vedic system. About 2000 years ago, the two systems overlapped, but due to precession, which only the Vedic system took into account, there is now a difference of about 23-24 degrees between the two – almost the value of the entire zodiac. It will also continue to move, but fortunately, very slowly. It takes nearly a century for a star to move one degree. Nonetheless, these different methods will of course affect how astrological charts are read in each system.
Vedic Astrology Signs and Placements
Due to differences in measurements, an Aries in Western astrology may become a Pisces in Vedic astrology. In fact, all of your zodiac signs may differ from those in Western astrology. This difference doesn’t invalidate your knowledge of your current zodiac sign, but it can provide a deeper understanding of who you are. Maybe you’re a Gemini, but you’ve always felt more like a fun-loving Taurus. Looking at both systems together (and any differences in notation) is a great way to enrich your inner knowledge and reconcile these seeming inconsistencies.
Aries: Misha (April 13 to May 14)
Taurus: Vrishabha (May 15 to June 14)
Gemini: Mithuna (June 15 to July 14)
cancer: Kakada (July 15 to August 14)
Leo: Sinha (August 15 to September 15)
Virgo: Kania (September 16 to October 15)
Libra: Tula (October 16 to November 14)
Scorpio: Vrishchika (November 15 to December 14)
Sagittarius: Dhanus (December 15 to January 13)
Capricorn: Makara (January 14 to February 11)
Aquarius: Kumbha (February 12 to March 12)
Pisces: Mina (March 13 to April 12)
Deepen Self-Understanding Through Vedic Astrology
Your Vedic placement provides special insight into the laws of karma associated with you, why you do what you do, and the impact of your actions on others. It will include other people in your life and your connections with them. It will explore what causes certain struggles in your life and how to overcome it through your spiritual development. Additionally, Vedic astrology will help you understand what you are used to doing, how to become more aware of these patterns, and how to get rid of them when needed.
Due to their differences, these two astrological systems complement each other. Western astrology is especially accurate and helpful if you want to understand yourself and your loved ones more deeply. Vedic astrology is especially useful if you want to understand your karma, dharma and why you are here. It can also provide hints about the timing of future events and even provide perspective that may help you live a more karmically happy life.
