What exactly is the significance of Earth Day?

In the spring of 1970, Earth Day was celebrated for the first time. Until now, there haven’t been many environmental laws to protect the Earth’s water, air or natural resources.

When more than 20 million people demonstrated across the country, the government took notice. Demonstrations are taking place in major cities, small towns, rural areas and urban sprawl, with a chorus calling for the need to protect the environment, the planet, the air we breathe and the water we drink from pollution and unethical access to resources.

Scientists are looking for ways to “deposit” available carbon to help stop global warming. Entrepreneurs are making jewelry using recycled plastic from the ocean to raise funds to eliminate more plastic. Environmental activists are taking action to clean up beaches and hiking trails.

Believe it or not, the little things do make a big difference. The date was chosen in part because of its proximity to Arbor Day, a day set aside specifically for the planting of trees. While you may not want to do strenuous physical labor, there are a few things you can do to celebrate this day:

– Prepare a yard as a small garden
– Participate in the “Global Cleanup”
